Do the names J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and E.D.I.T.H. ring a bell? If they do, you probably know them as the fictional AIs created by Tony Stark himself. Real-life counterparts like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant might not be as advanced as any of these fictional AIs but they all do the same objective: making life better. Careers in STEM are changing the world as we know it. In turn, new Computer Science courses are being developed to further study breakthroughs in tech.

Do you want to be part of the next generation of innovators to create positive change through technology? We’ve got great news for you, so keep reading ahead!

New Design and Artificial Intelligence Program to open at SUTD

Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has revealed that they will be introducing a new bachelor’s program very soon. The university will roll-out a Bachelor’s Degree Program in Design and Artificial Intelligence for the first time in 2020. As the first program of it’s kind in Singapore, the pioneer batch will have an intake of 50 students. It will take around 3.5 years for a student to earn a full degree.

So why did SUTD feel the need to add a new specialization to an already rich variety of computer science courses? President Chong Tow Chong reveals the university’s vision of equipping the future generation with the necessary skills that will allow them to maximize their potential in the digital era.

“For this digital era, data is going to be the currency. AI and machine learning will be the necessary tools to capitalize on. There will be a new generation of designers that will utilize AI in many ways,” says President Chong.

This vision also aligns with the SUTD’s long-term goal of developing future leaders who can impact society by applying their academic knowledge to create solutions to real-life problems.

A growing tradition of using technology to create social impact

Founded in 2009, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is a relatively young institution. Therefore, it can be easy to simply assume that it has been solely focused on establishing its roots. You’re in for a surprise, though! In contrast to these expectations, SUTD has managed to branch out into partnerships that have been mutually beneficial for the school and the local community.

One successful partnership was between SUTD and Duke-NUS Medical School. This resulted in the creation of a special academic track meant to provide interdisciplinary learning. Medical students taking this special track gained foundation courses in either architecture or engineering.

For Education Minister Ong, SUTD’s future hinges on bringing technology and design to various sectors of society as a means of driving progress. Another partnership which brings SUTD closer to this future is with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. This new agreement will aim to establish an aviation studies research institute. Consequently, this institute will focus on air traffic management, economics, and emerging aviation technology.

“If we examine today and visit Terminal 4 and Jewel, we will notice that these are not just engineering feats but crucibles of innovation,” says Minister Ong.

SUTD’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Clarivate Analytics recognized them as the 5th most influential scientific research institution in the field of telecommunications in 2017.

Making a difference through great design

Designer, engineer, and member of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asian Social Entrepreneurs — Ken Chua is a standout from SUTD’s pioneer graduate class. At the age of twenty-five, Ken is the founder of a design agency named (these)abilities that aims to create more inclusive products for persons with disabilities.

The company’s most prominent partnership to date has been a tie-up with Grab. A successful partnership resulted in a more intuitive ride-hailing process for the deaf and visually-impaired. Ken has used his knowledge of technology and design to create solutions.
