on Google Plus
The benefits of sports are countless! It’s good for your body, your mind, and your—education? Yes, that’s right! Sure you’ve heard of athletic scholarships, but we bet you’ve never considered going for an athletic scholarship abroad.
Studying abroad exposes you to experiences that develop skills which make you more desirable to employers. Not to mention, you’ll see more of the world as you complete your education. It’s a plus that you’ll be able to play the sport you love along the way.
Piqued your interest yet?
Why should I consider? What are the benefits of sports scholarships abroad?
In going for this option, you marry the benefits of sports with the benefits of studying abroad! Each one already has a long list of upskills. Putting them together would make you a well-rounded individual—physically fit, academically sound, and ready to take on the rest of your life.
As mentioned above, studying abroad develops skills which give you an edge in the eyes of employers. These so-called 21st-century skills, are not things you can just pick up in any classroom. You get them by pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone. Naming a few, we have:
- Intercultural skills
- Flexibility & adaptability
- Tolerance for ambiguity
- Work ethic
Sports, on the other hand, instill sportsmanship and grit, on top of keeping you in shape and mentally sharp. Rigorous training requires determination for you to push your limits. Not to mention, as an athlete, you should also know how to work well with a team. This mindset would serve you well for the rest of your life.
At the end of it all, even if you have no plan of playing your sport professionally afterward, an athletic scholarship is still a great way to maximize your education while cutting its costs. You’ve got nothing to lose, and everything to gain when you apply.
How do I start?
First of all, research your options! There is an abundance of athletic scholarships abroad if you knew where to look. For starters, check out our Study Abroad portal on the blog or our website to find a school that fits your needs. If you don’t find what you’re looking for there, you could also look for organizations like EducationUSA or AthNet which help connect students to colleges and universities in certain countries.
Here in the Philippines, every school would have its own culture, so just imagine how schools are like in another country. Every country offers its own culture. Cross that with the number of schools in that country. The options become endless!
Knowing what it’s like to study in other parts of the world would save you from massive culture shock. There’s also the added layer of playing for the school’s athletic team which would play a big factor in your adjustment. You should look for a college or university that best fits your needs. Instead of forcing yourself to match with the school, go for the school that matches you and your priorities and long-term goals. You’d thank yourself in the long run.
However, if you’re well-informed, you should have no problem! Like how any athlete goes through conditioning and training before a game, this pre-work lays the groundwork so you’d know how to make better calls. This time around, you’re your own coach!
Set on your school? Prepare these!
On top of the school’s standard requirements, begin drafting a sports CV, bio, or resume that would list your athletic accomplishments. It would also help to prepare videos of your performance in games or events.
Be thorough with it! Some athletes think that they don’t get the athletic scholarship offer because they weren’t good enough to play at the college level. In reality, this step in the process (i.e. expressing how you can be valuable to the school’s team) is more important than your actual talent and playing ability. As such, you need all the help you can get.
Take it further. Ask for letters of reference from your coaches and other mentors. Have them with your target school how they see your potential to succeed and represent the institution with a sports or athletic scholarship!
Following the game metaphor, this part is the actual game. There will be a lot of back-and-forth correspondence between you and the school. You have to be strategic with your communication because every e and every call counts as a shot you make to win the game. Make it count!
