As a field, it encompasses a wide range of disciplines that emphasizes the social and cultural side of seamanship. At best, it prepares people for a variety of careers in and out of the sea!

Africa: Durban University of Technology (DUT)

DUT is a public university in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa with five campuses around the country. Since its establishment in 2002, the school’s qualifications have been widely recognized internationally, being one of the only five technical institutions in the African continent to offer Doctoral degrees. Its maritime studies offerings include two diploma programs in Nautical Studies along with Shipping and Logistics.

 

Asia: Dalian Maritime University (DMU)

Established in 1909, DNU is a public university located in Dalian, Liaoning, People’s Republic of China. Famously known as China’s “cradle of navigators”, the school prides itself as an authority in maritime studies, being the first university in China to receive an ISO 9001 Certificate in the field as well as having strong linkages with 20 internationally renowned maritime institutions such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Marine Engineering, Marine Traffic Engineering, and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering are just some of the curricular offerings under its marine studies programs.

 

Europe: World Maritime University (WMU)

WMU is an international postgraduate maritime university and United Nations research institute. Established in 1983 by the IMO, the school guarantees quality education in maritime studies which aim to produce global maritime leaders, experts, and professionals. It offers various programs in Maritime Affairs for doctoral and masters studies with specific research areas, as well as distance learning in partnership with DNV GL and Lloyd’s Maritime Academy.

 

The Americas: State University of New York Maritime College (SUNY Maritime College)

Being one of the only seven degree-granting maritime schools in the United States, SUNY Maritime College is a leading school for maritime studies which offers a wide range of bachelors and masters degrees such as Marine Engineering, Marine Transportation, and International Transportation Management.

Its comprehensive programs equip students with a hands-on training experience aboard its own 565-foot Training Ship Empire State VI. No doubt, SUNY remains as a top choice for recruiters in the maritime industry!

 

Oceania: Australian Maritime College (AMC)

Established in 1980, AMC is a public specialist institute for maritime studies under the University of Tasmania (TUS) in Australia. It also serves as the National Institute for Maritime Education, Training, and Research. Rightly so, the school boasts of world-class excellence when it comes to learning and research facilities to support its curricular offerings from undergraduate to postgraduate education.

Some of AMC’s courses include Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics, Maritime Business and International Logistics, Ocean Seafaring, and Coastal seafaring and VET courses.

 

Pursuing a career in maritime studies can be challenging (think months of sea travel!), but it’s nonetheless rewarding.
