Any student-athlete enrolling on or after August 1, 2016 who is interested in playing a sport at an NCAA Division I institution will be required to meet new eligibility standards. The student-athlete must complete 10 of 16 required NCAA-approved core courses before the start of their senior year. He/she must also earn a minimum of a 2.3 GPA in core courses, and is not permitted to retake core courses in an attempt to improve their GPA. Prior standards required only a 2.0 GPA and the student-athlete wasn’t mandated to take a certain number of classes before their senior year.
In addition, an academic redshirt will be added for a student-athlete who meets some, but not all of the eligibility requirements. He/she can receive athletic aid, practice with the team during the first academic term or semester, but is prohibited from competition.
